Tuition in Sri Lanka — A Nationwide Lesson in Logistics
O/L and A/L results decide university entrance, careers, and life trajectories — and private tuition sits at the centre of preparation for both.
But the traditional model is bound to physical classrooms: students commute after school, seats run out before demand does, a missed lesson can never be replayed, and notes never leave the room.
An exceptional lecturer in Colombo teaches a few hundred students a year — while thousands more need exactly what that lecturer offers.
Cornerstone had a better idea. Bring the classroom online — live, recorded, and structured — so that a student in Jaffna, Kandy, or a village outside Matara prepares for the same O/L and A/L as a student in Colombo. The obstacles were not conceptual. They were systemic:
Distance — students cannot physically reach every good lecturer
Capacity — seats are capped by room size, not by demand
Retention — a missed class is lost; there is no replay
Materials — notes and past papers scatter across paper, PDFs, and chat groups
Education should scale with knowledge, not with geography.
The Brief — A School Without Walls
Cornerstone Education Institute, based in Mount Lavinia on the Galle Road, came to Cognion with a clear mission: "Foundation For Education Excellence."
Cornerstone wanted to become a genuine online provider for the two examinations that matter most — the Ordinary Level (O/L, grades 10–11) and the Advanced Level (A/L, grades 12–13): live and recorded classes, study materials, and revision support, for students across the island.
Not a brochure site. A working institution in software — where students enrol, attend live lessons, replay missed sessions, download materials, pay fees, and message staff, while lecturers and administrators run everything from one dashboard.
Cognion's answer had three parts: a live classroom that feels like a real one, an office that runs the business, and an architecture built to scale.
Why build a new platform instead of using one that already exists?
The brief didn't fit one tool. Live classes, cloud recording, replays, attendance, role-based permissions, payments, messaging, and notifications — no single existing platform delivered all of it as one coherent product.
The language of the student. It had to speak English, Sinhala, and Tamil, and work as an installable app on modest phones and weak connections — constraints off-the-shelf products rarely treat as core requirements.
One product, three roles. A student experience, a lecturer workspace, and an administrator office had to share one backbone — not three logins across three different subscriptions.
Owned, not rented. A custom build is a fixed asset — no per-seat fees, no monthly SaaS ceiling, and every feature under the institute's control.

The Build — A Stack Built to Teach
Cognion chose a technology stack that balances a fast, installable experience with a structured backend that can grow with the institute.
A single-page application, installable as a native-style app. A Node.js backend on a relational MySQL database. And real-time updates — a class going live, a message arriving, a notification firing — the moment they happen.

Not another video stack
Building on the Zoom Meeting SDK meant proven, low-latency live classrooms out of the box — so engineering effort went into the school, not into re-inventing video transport.
Real-time by default
Class going live, a message arriving, a complaint answered — events push the moment they happen, so the campus feels immediate instead of page-refresh archaeology.
Installable where students live
A progressive web app reaches every phone on every network with no app-store download — the install step that would quietly lose students.
Relationships that must not break
Courses, enrolments, payments, attendance, and messages are entangled by design — a relational database keeps them consistent and auditable as the institute scales.
The video layer is the sensitive part. Live classes need to work on the devices Sri Lankan students actually own — so a student checks their connection, camera, microphone, and speaker before joining, not when the class has already begun.

The Deployment — Leaving Nothing to Chance
Launching was about more than code: being found, staying secure, and keeping the private parts private.
The institute is published as a full JSON-LD structured entity — an EducationalOrganization and LocalBusiness with its Mount Lavinia address, coordinates, opening hours, and an offer catalogue — so search engines understand exactly what Cornerstone teaches.
A canonical sitemap exposes every public page; a precise robots policy keeps the signed-in area — dashboards, live classes, payments, and messages — out of search engines entirely. Public is public, private is private.
Every marketing page is indexable. Every classroom, payment, and message is not. Search engines advertise the school; they never enter it.
Addressing Concerns — Objections and Responses
"Why not just use Zoom and a WhatsApp group?"
Because a school is not a video call. It is enrolment, schedules, attendance, materials, payments, and communication — one platform instead of six apps held together by habit.
"Students have weak or unstable connections."
They check before they join. And when the network is too weak for live video, the recorded lesson streams adaptively and is still available afterward.
"Lecturers are teachers, not engineers."
They get an interface for teaching: schedule a class, start the session, join, end it. The recording and attendance happen automatically around them.
"Won't recordings be shared everywhere?"
Access requires a confirmed account. Classrooms, recordings, and materials live behind enrolment — the platform is a school, not a link on YouTube.
"Isn't a custom build expensive?"
It is an owned asset. Cornerstone pays for build-out once, then runs the institute on it — no per-seat fees, no monthly SaaS ceiling, and every feature subject to the institute's control.
"Why not just post classes on Facebook Live?"
Because discovery is only the first minute. Enrolment, revision, replay, payments, and progress all happen after that — in the school.
